This project is an attempt to process a serious accident. Weeks of depending on the care of others left me feeling helpless and estranged from my own body. The images try to capture that feeling. A dancer posed for the series, and in the photographs she merges with the very orthopaedic aids I relied on, appearing at once grotesque and strangely natural in her posture.
With dependence comes a loss of control: movements that seem effortless in good health suddenly push against the limits of the body.
The photographs are printed using the historic bromoil process, which carries a loss of control of its own. It is also a laborious technique, much like recovering from a serious accident: both can be guided to a degree, but never fully controlled.
